The moment you become aware of the ego in you it is strictly speaking no longer the ego

Awareness of ego is the beginning of its dissolution.

Have you ever felt like there is a tiny, grumpy version of yourself living inside your head? It is that voice that constantly judges, compares, and worries about what others think. Eckhart Tolle’s beautiful insight reminds us that the very second we notice this voice, we have stepped outside of it. We are no longer being driven by that ego-driven impulse because we have become the observer. In that moment of awareness, a little space opens up, and we find a version of ourselves that is much calmer, much more peaceful, and much more real.

In our everyday lives, this happens in the middle of much messier moments than we might expect. It is not always a grand spiritual awakening; often, it is just a quiet realization in the middle of a traffic jam or a heated argument. We might feel our chest tighten and our temper rise, but then, suddenly, we think, Oh, I am being very defensive right and judgmental right now. That split second of recognition is where the magic lives. It is the moment the storm loses its power over us because we are no longer the storm; we are the sky watching the storm pass by.

I remember a day when I was feeling particularly overwhelmed by my to-do list. I was spiraling into a state of panic, telling myself that I was failing and that everything was falling apart. I was caught in a loop of self-criticism that felt so heavy. But then, I stopped and simply noticed the panic. I thought, I am experiencing a feeling of overwhelm. As soon as I labeled it and observed it, the grip of that frantic energy loosened. I was no longer the panic itself; I was the person noticing the panic, and that made all the difference in how I breathed through the rest of my afternoon.

This realization is a gentle reminder that you are much more than your thoughts, your mistakes, or your anxieties. You are the vast, quiet consciousness that holds all of those experiences. When you find yourself caught in a cycle of negativity, try not to fight it or judge yourself for it. Instead, simply try to notice it. Just bring your attention to the feeling, and watch how the ego begins to lose its hold on your heart. Today, I invite you to simply be the observer of your own beautiful, complex life.
