Quote of the Day
Discover fresh inspiration every day
“Life is about discovering yourself. The more I know what I want, the more I know who I am.”
In the process of discovering ourselves, we grow. Understanding and loving yourself is the first step to growth.
Have you ever felt like you were wandering through a thick fog, unsure of which direction to take or even where you were standing? That is how many of us feel when we look at life as a series of things that just happen to us. But James Michener offers us such a beautiful, empowering perspective when he suggests that life is actually a journey of discovery. He reminds us that identity isn't something we are simply born with, fully formed and finished, but something we sculpt through our choices, our passions, and our very clear desires. To know who you are, you must first dare to decide what you want.
In our everyday lives, we often get so caught up in meeting expectations or following the paths laid out by others that we forget to check in with our own hearts. We might find ourselves working a job that pays the bills but leaves our spirit hungry, or staying in social circles that don't truly reflect our values. It is easy to lose ourselves in the noise of the world. However, the moment we start saying, 'This is what I love,' or 'This is what I will no longer tolerate,' we begin to draw the outlines of our true selves. Every preference we identify is like a brushstroke on the canvas of our identity.
I remember a time when I felt quite lost myself, much like a little duckling separated from the flock. I was trying so hard to be everything for everyone else that I had forgotten what actually made my heart flutter. I decided to start small, by making intentional choices about the things that brought me peace, like the quiet moments of writing or the joy of a warm cup of tea. As I became more certain about these small preferences, a much larger picture of my character began to emerge. I realized that by honoring my small wants, I was actually building a foundation for my much larger purpose.
This process of self-discovery can be intimidating because it requires us to take responsibility for our own happiness. It is much easier to drift than to steer. But there is such profound magic in the steering. When you begin to recognize your own hunger for adventure, or your need for stillness, or your passion for helping others, you are essentially coming home to yourself. You are no longer a stranger in your own life.
Today, I want to encourage you to take a tiny step toward that discovery. Look closely at your day and ask yourself: what is one thing I know I truly want? It doesn't have to be a grand life change; it can be as simple as wanting more rest or wanting to learn a new skill. Listen to that answer, and let it guide you a little closer to the person you are meant to be.
