No one can make you feel inferior without your consent

Your sense of worth is yours to protect and no external force can diminish it without permission.

Have you ever walked away from a conversation feeling small, like you were suddenly much less important than the person speaking to you? Eleanor Roosevelt’s beautiful words remind us that while we cannot control the unkindness of others, we do hold the ultimate key to our own worth. To feel inferior is, in a way, an invitation we accidentally accept. It is a heavy realization to grasp, but also one of the most liberating truths we can ever learn: our value is not up for public debate or subject to someone else's opinion.

In our everyday lives, this often shows up in much quieter, more subtle ways than a grand insult. It might be the way a coworker rolls their eyes during your presentation, or the heavy silence from a friend when you share a dream. In those moments, it is so easy to let their coldness seep into our hearts and start telling ourselves that we aren't good enough or that our ideas lack merit. We begin to build a cage out of their judgments, forgetting that we are the ones holding the door unlocked.

I remember a time when I was working on a project that I was incredibly proud of, only to have a very critical person dismiss it with a single, sharp comment. I spent the next three days feeling like my hard work was meaningless, replaying their words like a broken record. It wasn't until I sat down and realized that their criticism was actually a reflection of their own grumpy mood, rather than my capability, that I felt the weight lift. I had been giving them permission to dim my light, and once I revoked that consent, I could breathe again.

We all have that inner voice that sometimes agrees with the critics, making us feel even more diminished. But remember, your worth is a constant, like the sun behind the clouds. Even when someone tries to cast a shadow, the sun remains unchanged. You are allowed to stand tall, even when others are being unkind.

Next time you feel that sting of judgment, I want you to take a deep breath and pause. Ask yourself, am I truly letting this person's words change how I see myself? Practice saying no to the feeling of inferiority. You have the power to protect your peace and keep your dignity intact, simply by refusing to agree with those who do not see your true magic.
