🕯️ Faith
Nothing worth doing is completed in our lifetime therefore we must be saved by faith

Faith sustains us in work that extends beyond our own lives.

Sometimes, the weight of our unfinished business can feel quite heavy on our hearts. We live in a world that celebrates the finish line, the completed project, and the final victory. But Reinhold Niebuhr reminds us of a profound truth: much of what truly matters—love, wisdom, justice, and even the deepest healing—is a work in progress that extends far beyond our own brief time on this earth. There is a certain relief in realizing that we aren't actually responsible for finishing everything; we are only responsible for being faithful to the process.

I think about this often when I look at the giant, ancient oak trees in the park. When a tiny acorn sprouts, it has no idea it will one day provide shade for generations it will never meet. It simply does its job of reaching for the light. In our daily lives, we often get caught up in the frustration of 'not being there yet.' We feel like failures because we haven't mastered our patience, or we haven't fixed every broken relationship, or we haven't reached our ultimate life goals. We feel the pressure of an incomplete masterpiece.

I remember a time when I was trying to learn how to garden. I spent months planting seeds, watering, and weeding, only to feel discouraged when the blooms didn't appear by the end of the season. I felt like I had failed because my garden wasn't 'complete.' But then I realized that the beauty wasn't just in the flower, but in the act of nurturing the soil. My small effort was a seed planted in a much larger cycle of life. Even if I didn't see the full glory of the garden, my faithfulness to the caretaking was where the true value lived.

When we lean into faith, we stop obsessing over the finish line and start focusing on the integrity of our steps. Faith allows us to trust that the seeds we plant in kindness, hard work, and love will continue to grow, even if we aren't around to see the full harvest. It takes the pressure off our shoulders and allows us to breathe deeply, knowing that we are part of something much larger and more beautiful than our individual timelines.

Today, I invite you to take a moment to look at one of your 'unfinished' parts. Instead of feeling the sting of incompleteness, try to see the beauty in the effort. What is one small, faithful step you can take today, trusting that the outcome is held in much larger hands?
